Global warming: ‘We need to be concerned about it'

DUNDEE - It could take less than 30 years for Lake Erie's depth to decrease as much as eight feet, leading to an expansion of the shoreline and the drying up of nearby wetlands and devastating wildlife populations.

If nothing is done to curtail carbon dioxide emissions, scientists say, global warming would have a direct impact on Monroe County, its sportsmen and the economy. That was the subject of a town hall meeting held Tuesday at Cabela's in Dundee.

"We are beginning to see some effects of global warming in our back yard," said Dr. John Hartig, manager of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. "Some of your favorite hunting grounds may not be wet."
